Tierra Whack – Tip Toe

Tierra Whack makes her film debut in “Him”, the new supernatural horror thriller from writer-director Justin Tipping, and her soundtrack contribution “Tip Toe” shows a darker side of her artistry. The track, co-produced by Bobby Krlic (The Haxan Cloak), trades Whack’s usual playful energy for something creepy and skittery that fits the movie’s ominous tone.

Krlic, who scored Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid”, brings his signature spooky production to hip-hop artists for the “Him” soundtrack. Jordan Peele produces the film, which stars Tyriq Withers as a football prospect at a training camp where things go very wrong. The cast includes Marlon Wayans, Julia Fox, and Tim Heidecker.

Whack’s “Tip Toe” sits alongside tracks from Denzel Curry, Maxo Kream, Sampa The Great, and Guapdad 4000 (who also debuts in the film). The soundtrack mixes new material with classics from Mobb Deep and Gucci Mane, creating an interesting blend of horror score and rap that works better than expected.

Krlic wanted to “bend the genre without losing the emotional thread”, and hearing these rappers adapt their styles to his dark soundscapes makes for compelling listening. “Him” hits theaters September 19th, with the soundtrack dropping the same day via Loma Vista.
